Over thirty seasons at the helm of a Crawford Melonseed have given me a host of wonderful memories that range from ghosting on sunset zephyrs to spray-flinging stomps to windward in a tie-your-hat-on breeze -- and everything in between.  Her wholesome nature and dependable behavior always brought me safely back to shore with a grin, even on days when everyone else stayed home.  An ordinary day at the helm of a Melonseed is nearly always extraordinary.  She has that way about her.

Three Cheers is the third Melonseed Roger built for me over three decades, (hence the name) and I asked him to add some custom details.  He gave the bottom an epoxy/graphite finish up to the waterline and separated it from the topsides with a painted scarlet boot stripe.  The effect is stunning.

My obsession with sailing has been diverted into my new passion for rowing.  Consequently, I did not sail Three Cheers last season.  She deserves better than that, which is why I’d like to sell her to someone who will enjoy and appreciate her as much as I have.

Details:  She has been continually garage-stored and is in great condition – washed, waxed, and ready for her new owner.  Her epoxy/graphite bottom has some scrapes from beaching, but her deck and topsides are free of dings or gouges. She’s well-equipped with the following:

  • 2011 Load Rite galvanized trailer custom fitted to the boat by Roger, bearing buddies, and spare tire.  New tires in 2022.
  • Three sails – one tanbark, original to the boat, one cream which has been professionally re-cut, and a beautiful new vertical-cut dark tanbark made by M&H Bartles of Boothbay and used about a dozen times.
  • Galvanized Danforth anchor with chain and rode.
  • Shaw & Tenney 7.5 ft. spruce spoon blade oars with cherry tip inlays, sewn leathers and buttons.
  • Two pairs of horned bronze W&C oarlocks.
  • Sewn-on sprit and sprit-boom leathers.
  • Cover and center support.
  • Rudder epoxied and varnished. Varnished tiller.
  • Additional teak tiller, extended length (6” longer than standard).
  • Cetol finish on coaming and rub rails, teak oil on floorboards.
  • Three Cheers masthead flag with pigstick and mounting hardware.
  • Teak staff and ensign.
  • 3” bronze cleats mounted aft on port and starboard coaming for lashing tiller.
  • A fender, bailer, 2 flotation cushions, additional sheet and miscellaneous gear included.

Regarding the cover.  Since I didn't trailer the boat with it on, it’s probably only been on the boat a dozen times, so it's pretty much pristine as far as wear goes.  However, the seam at the bow where it turns downward to wrap over the stem piece came apart years ago.  It was never a big deal to me since I didn't trailer with it, but full disclosure is in order.
